General information only
The Bone & Joint Anaesthesia Guide describes anaesthesia and pain relief for orthopaedic surgery in general terms. It cannot take into account your health, your medicines, your operation or the hospital where it will happen. This information is general and does not replace advice from your treating practitioner. If anything here differs from what your surgeon, anaesthetist, GP or hospital tells you, follow their instructions, especially about fasting, medicines, blood thinners and driving.
Not a clinic or a booking service
This website does not provide, book or recommend surgery, anaesthesia or particular hospitals or surgeons, and it does not say where Dr Aly works. Reading it, or sending a message through it, does not make you Dr Aly’s patient or anyone else’s.
Emergencies
This website and its contact form are not monitored for urgent problems. In an emergency, call 000. For health advice at any time, call healthdirect on 1800 022 222 (NURSE-ON-CALL in Victoria).
How current the information is
Each clinical page shows who wrote it, the status of its clinical review and the relevant dates. Medical guidance changes, and a page may fall behind between reviews. Our editorial policy explains how pages are checked and corrected.
Links to other organisations
We link to organisations such as ANZCA, the Australian Society of Anaesthetists, healthdirect, the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care and Victoria’s Department of Health so you can read their guidance for yourself. We do not control their websites, and a link does not mean they endorse this guide.
Checking a practitioner’s registration
You can check the registration and specialty of any Australian health practitioner on the Ahpra register of practitioners.
